Biography

The Waipu Museum is a small regional history museum on New Zealand’s North Island. The Museum is dedicated to the global migrations that took place throughout the 19th century, in particular the Gaelic speaking people that came to live in Waipu; A community of Scots, banished from their homes by the Highland clearances, emigrated first to Nova Scotia, and then by way of Australia to Waipu, where their descendants still live today. The Waipu Museum’s collection of photographs shows various Mckenzies, McLeods and McLeans establishing their new lives in New Zealand, while maintaining their Presbyterian faith and Highland traditions.
