Shakespeare, Jocasta

Biography

Jocasta Shakespeare has previously shown her work in London, Brighton and Majorca. For this new collection of fish paintings, she has developed the Japanese tradition of Gyotaku - the process of recording fish catches using ink and rice paper – into a distinctive translation of her own. Travelling to fish markets around the world, including Brazil, Uruguay, Cuba, the Bahamas and particularly Columbia, she sources local fish directly from the people who caught them to create canvases that celebrate the energy of life in the ocean. The canvasses are begun using the actual bodies of fish, on location and finished in the studio with gesso, oils, pastels, glazes and raw pigment. Floral canvasses use the same techniques but in different ways.
