Biography

Jack Streetly served with the Royal Navy between 1924 and 1935, and was posted to HMS Hermes in 1927 when she was sent to China to assist with defending foreign residents following the Nanking Incident. Streetly's photographs, taken between 1927 and 1929, are unique in capturing not only the aftermath of the violence in the port of Nanking, but also life aboard HMS Hermes, one of the world's first aircraft carriers, and Streetly's subsequent travels to Hong Kong and Borneo.
