GALAMBOS, TAMAS

Biography

Tamas Galambos was born in Budapest but grew up in Eger in North-East Hungary. As a child, he was rated class-X by Communist authorities because of his family background and was duly suspended from various schools. However, showing remarkable talents in wrestling and in drawing he began to attend regional and national children’s competitions in both. Even so, after winning a drawing competition for 11-year-olds, the regional Party Committee put a ban on exhibiting his drawing alongside those of the other children. He ended up finishing the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest nonetheless, studying under Jeno Barcsay. Tamas Galambos is the holder of the national Munkacsy Award. His idiosyncratic, sophisticated-naïve style renders him a champion of outsider art. He combines the Surrealist’s free associations with a children’s fairy tale fantasy, applying a characteristically ornamental, folkloric brushwork. Sometimes he makes minor detours in the worlds of pop-art and strip cartoons. His themes vary from mythology and politics to nature, with colourful compositions never short of a tinge of irony. He has had solo exhibitions home and abroad, which won him local and international acclaim. His paintings can be found in collections around the globe.
