Biography
The Freer Gallery of Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery contain some of the most important holdings of Asian art in the world. The works of American artists influenced by the Orient are also featured, such as the late-nineteenth-century works of American landscape and portraiture by James McNeill Whistler and his contemporaries. One of two Smithsonian museums that feature Asian art, the Freer Gallery houses more than 26,000 works from all points of the Asian continent, including China, Japan, Korea and India. These works include Asian porcelains, Japanese screens and Islamic art.
