DRAMBUIE COLLECTION

Biography

The Drambuie Liquor Company – makers of the famous Scottish digestif – amassed one of the world’s finest collections of works of art associated with the 18th century Jacobite cause; after all the secret recipe of Drambuie is alleged to have been divulged to the MacKinnon family by Bonnie Prince Charlie! The highlight of the collection is the famous Spottiswoode ‘Amen’ glass that, in an exquisite example of free-hand engraving, bears a toast to the “King o’er the Water“, a subversive reference to the Young Pretender himself. The collection, that also includes many fine examples of work by the Scottish colourists, is currently on long-term loan to the Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh.
