HESSEN-KASSEL HERITAGE
Biography
Kassel State Museum’s internationally acclaimed collection of European Old Masters is thanks primarily to their 18th Century prince, Landgrave Wilhelm VIII of Hesse-Kassel’s, prolific arts patronage. Assembling one of the finest collections of the Dutch Baroque, both in his own lifetime and still today, the museum’s comprehensive collection is outstanding for its depth and systematic displays in school and period. Adding to the earlier acquisitions of his princely predecessors, Wilhelm housed his comprehensive collection in the Baroque Schloss Wilhelmshohe building. European masters from the 15th to 18th centuries are on show including Albrecht Durer, Frans Hals, Rembrandt, Rubens, Poussin and van Dyck.
