Pushparaj, Neela

Biography

I am a 80 year old grandmother and a retired pathologist who enjoyed several years of my carreer as a pathologist and teacher until my retirement in 2000. A few years prior to that, I started watercolor lessons at age 49 and progressed from recreational learning to part time art student and many art workshops over the following years. The teacher who most influenced my style is Barbara Nechis. My favorite way of painting is to add colors to wet or damp paper and allowing shapes to emerge from the movement. Then I pick out shapes and structures with negative painting. I use a veritable feast of colours in my florals which range from realism to partial and total abstracts. Apart from painting, I also curate an art show for women under the auspecies of the local chapter of the American Association of University Women every year for the past five years. Painting is an integral part of my life. It is the expression of my joy in everything I see.
