POWELL WILKINS, WILLIAM

Biography

Draughtsman, printmaker, teacher and stained glass artist, born in Kersey, Suffolk, son of the writer Vaughan Wilkins. He was brought up in south Wales, attending Swansea College of Art, 1955–7, to study stained glass; Royal College of Art, 1957–60; then evening classes in drawing at Hammersmith School of Art. Among his subsequent positions was teaching art at Malvern College for several years and information officer for the Greater London Council’s architects’ department. He wrote on architecture for various publications, campaigning against ugliness. Won WAC Bursary, 1971; its Grant, 1978; and an Ingram Merrill Foundation Award, 1980, the year he was first interna-tional artist in residence, Artists for the Environment Foundation, Delaware Water Gap National Park, New Jersey.
