The Atwater Kent Museum of Philadelphia (AKMP) is the city’s official history museum, with nearly 100,000 objects and images, spanning 300 years of Philadelphia history. This includes 11,500 objects from the Art and Artifact Collection of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Located just around the corner from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, AKMP is the gateway to Philadelphia history. The Museum was completed in 1826, originally to house the Franklin Institute. In 1938, radio inventor and manufacturer, A. Atwater Kent, purchased the building and gave it to the city on the condition that it be used as the museum of Philadelphia history.
