Biography

Father and son artist designers Edmund and Alec created magical designs of animals, birds, plants and trees set in mystical landscapes all full of colour and imagination. Their work contributed to this exceptionally creative period of decorative art. Edmund, born in 1866 trained in the applied arts first in Munich and then at the Silver Studio in West London. In 1902 he established his weaving works first in Haslemere then Letchworth where designs became fine bespoke fabrics woven in silk on hand and jacquard looms. Alec born in 1899 trained at the Byam Shaw Art School in London. Intrigued by ideas of ‘flow’ and ‘movement’ his work is full of rhythm and a zest for life. Later Edmund with his grandson John explored design ideas of animals and children. This menagerie of imagery, both wild and sublime, conjure the feelings of wonder, joy and fear that are the essence of children's folklore. A hundred years on their designs still enchant.
