Biography

Hungarian-born Philip de László, 1869-1937, is now recognised as one of the most significant portrait painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His popularity derived from his skill in capturing a sitter’s likeness and ability to transpose glamour and vitality onto the canvas. He was one of the last exponents of the grand manner in portraiture, and painted the majority of the great international personalities of his time. He was based in London from 1907 but such was his success, he was constantly travelling the world acceding to the demands of his patrons. The scope of his sitters was broad, drawn from Royalty, politicians, scientists, soldiers, statesmen, artists, writers, famous beauties and intellectuals. Sandra de Laszlo and a team of editors are compiling the catalogue raisonné, presently being published in progress online: Readers’ registration free of charge: Please visit: www.delaszloarchivetrust.com
