Arthurs, Linda
Biography
I am not young. I am a 68 year old grandmother who has been a painter all her life. I am at the moment a textile painter, fascinated with ancient Islamic textiles, embroidery Turkmen, Shiraz, Suzani, Ottoman, China, Han, Ming, Qin, Han, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasty Aboriginal, South American, Etho-textiles. There is so much history to discover. I have spent the last few years on China alone and barely touched it. I am attracted at the moment to the tribes of the Middle East. Such richness of native colours. I enjoy doing the research. I have travelled all over the world with my trusty Canon camera and smuggled back amazing Chinese silk to make floorcloths. If I were to describe my work it would be bold colours and ethnic patterns. I have always been fascinated by ethnic work, cultural contributions, and organic colour. I am a colour person with floral overtones, curves, Indienne, Jacobean, unusual fabric designs and always on the hunt for obscure work. I tend to paint my own designs which actually are a memory of what I have been researching. I love detail well done. It shows caring. I believe that my work makes people smile. I only paint what I perceive to be beautiful things. If you have lived through what I have lived through as many women will say my age it is a decision to paint beauty, it is a decision not to be old. I plan on being young all my life.
