Biography

Antonius (b. 1952, Berlin) grew up in New York City, Metz, and Berlin. His artistic journey spans multiple disciplines, having worked as a DJ, dancer, and actor on stages in Vienna, Zurich, and Berlin. After studying briefly, he trained as a chemigrapher and lithographer before pursuing photography and painting as a self-taught artist. His career has taken him from social work in Omaha, Nebraska, to serving as a Creative Director in Austria and as a board member of the German Association of Advertising and Industrial Photographers. His photographic work, described as 'photographic choreographies,' has been exhibited worldwide. Antonius has received numerous awards, including the Panasonic Award (2010), the Reportage Award, and the German Photo Oscar (2013). His work has been showcased in Sydney, Osaka, New York City, Berlin, Stuttgart, Zingst, Leipzig, and Greifswald. In 2017, he was recognised in the Sony Competition. His 'VideoPoetries' have been screened and awarded at international festivals. Beyond his artistic practice, Antonius curates and organises workshops, festivals, and presentations, such as Digidata – The Long Night of Short Films (Berlin & Hamburg, 2005) and the opening trailer for the Berlin Asian Pacific Film Festival. He also published the book Unter der Erde geht das Leben weiter (2007), exploring life in the Berlin subway. His current long-term projects include Heartlandmoods-NYC… (since 2007), documenting the everyday black-and-white reality of his hometown, and Anderswelten (since 2009), focusing on themes of environment and life.
