SANTORINIOS, ANTONIOS
Biography
Antonios Santorinios-Santorinakis was born in Regensburg, Germany in 1941. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Art and the Academy of Graphic Art in Munich, he gained a scholarship to continue his studies in Greece. He arrived on Santorini in 1966, fell in love with the island and made it his home. It was there that he rediscovered and subsequently adopted the old local technique of painting on glass, taking scenes from everyday life on Santorini and the nearby island of Crete as his subject matter. Today he continues to paint on glass in his own inimitable style, depicting the wild beauty of the island scenery but at the same time adding a local human note. His characters reflect the warmth and hospitality of the people of his chosen homeland, captured amidst scenes of harvesting, feasting and tranquil seascapes. He now lives and works near Chania, Crete. He has had more than eighty solo and group exhibitions of paintings and etchings some of which have been held at The Barbican Art Centre, London, in Munich, Athens and the USA.
