Maidstone Museum and Bentlif Art Gallery is one of the finest museums in the South East. Located within Chillington Manor House, it contains many outstanding collections of a standard not normally seen outside London. The Museum of the Queen’s own West Kent Regiment is housed there. The Museum boasts a rich and impressive variety of historical objects, fine art and natural history. Fine and decorative arts include European and British paintings, ceramics, glass, furniture, costume and textiles from the 17th to 20th centuries. As well as English and continental old masters, the art gallery offers a lively programme of temporary contemporary exhibitions. The extensive archaeological collection comprises artefacts from the Prehistoric, Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Medieval periods, and an Egyptian collection including a Mummy. The Japanese collection of Edo period ceramics, lacquer, metalwork and prints is particularly impressive.
