Civilisations: Bridgeman Images used in the fascinating BBC/PBS series
We are delighted that over 80 images from Bridgeman Images were used in the fascinating series Civilisations, produced by the BBC in association with PBS.
Civilisations is a 2018 British art history television documentary nine-part series produced by the BBC in association with PBS as a follow-up to the original 1969 landmark series Civilisation by Kenneth Clark.
First broadcast in March 2018, the series tells the story of art from the dawn of human history to the present day, for the first time on a global scale. It introduces the viewers to the great masterworks of beauty, ingenuity and illumination created across the continents. It explores the visual culture of societies from around the globe, revealing alongside the magnificent objects made in the West the wealth of treasures created by other cultures, from the landscape scrolls of classical China and the sculpture of the Olmecs to African bronzes, Japanese prints and Mughal miniatures.

The all-encompassing premise of the show played to Bridgeman Images strengths. A huge variety of our images were used, from Japanese prints to impressionism, Islamic art to American Modernism.

Bridgeman also licensed a number of images for use in the two publications that accompany the series, Mary Beard's Civilisations: How Do We Look / The Eye of Faith, and David Olusoga's Civilisations: First Contact / The Cult of Progress, both published by Profile Books.
